In this 6 week course you will learn the basics of knitting, with other simple techniques such purl knitting, stripes and shaping through increasing and decreasing.  An experimental approach to knitting is encouraged, and you will be able to explore both colour and texture in knitting.

You will be able to apply your new skills to create a simple project such as a scarf, cushion cover or set of coasters. 

  •  Casting on and offf
  •  Plain knitting, plus knit and purl
  • Shaped knitting through increasing and decreasing
  • Stripes
  • Buttonholes and eyelet holes
  • Choosing the correct needles for the yarn
  • Following a basic pattern and pattern abbreviations
  • Joining new yarn and neatening edges
  • Correcting mistakes and dealing with ladders

Besides learning a practical skill, the slow rhythmic nature of knitting is thought to reduce stress and improve physical and mental wellbeing.

The classes are aimed at complete beginners to knitting.  The aim of the course is to build your confidence to work independently and tackle more advanced techniques after the course is complete.
